About the event

*** NOTE DATE RESCHEDULED TO 13TH JULY ***

Canal enthusiast and humanist Alan Platt will give an outline of the canal's history in Chester and context within the waterways system. He'll also explain how locks work etc.

A leisurely walk will take us down the lock flight and then right - into the canal basin and along to the footbridge at the far end; There is a graving/dry dock and a historic boatyard plus information panels. Then we will walk down the short Dee Arm which took the canal through locks from the basin down to the river lock which led into the River Dee. The River Lock is the opposite side of the busy Sealand Road (where we must all take care).

We will then walk back via the Water Gardens area. The walk is not a long one, maybe 2 miles max., there are some steep bits but nothing severe (or our guide wouldn’t be able to manage it!)

Health & Safety: we will be walking close to steep drops and deep water.

Parking and Start point: We'll meet at the car park outside Telfords Warehouse - On Canal Street more or less opposite The Telford Warehouse Pub there is a privately run small car park, where walkers may park (alternative parking is at the Delamere St car park near the Northgate roundabout).

The walk will leave here via a gate beside the entrance to this car park underneath the flyover there is a gate and pedestrian access signed ‘Canal and River Trust’ and this leads to the canal and the top lock. The footpath/towpath is on the far side of the lock and there is access via a footbridge.

At the end of the walk there is of course an option to enjoy a visit to Telfords Warehouse.

This group walk is open to everyone - you do not have to be a member of Humanists UK or Chester Humanists branch to come along and enjoy the walk and there is no charge though donations to the Chester Humanists Branch would be very welcome - either on the evening or via the donation button on the website https://www.chester.humanist.org.
